Aficionados of fine Japanese cuisine are in for a treat with traditional Edomae-style sushi restaurant, Satsuki. As with most Japanese restaurants, the emphasis at Satsuki is to share many dishes at your table, allowing each diner to sample a range of flavours. And with so many wonderful creations on offer, you’ll be happy to share the love. In addition to sensational sushi dishes, there are also many other standout favourites.

PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
Hot on the heels of highly successful sister restaurant Ha-Lu in Mt Hawthorn, Satsuki in Subiaco is already making a fine name for itself after opening its doors in February this year. Pushing the boundaries of Japanese cuisine, the sushi at Satsuki is based on a style called Edomae, known for its attention to detail in preparation. To get a true feel for this highly regarded technique, I recommend trying the “sushi Satsuki”. Your table will soon be graced with a platter adorned with seven pieces of immaculately prepared Edomae-style nigiri sushi featuring the likes of soy marinated zuke-style tuna, white fish of the day, seared vinegared mackerel, salmon caviar, local octopus, sweet Anago eel and atsuyaki omelette souffle.

Order this dish and you’re off to a great start! Being a sucker for Wagyu beef served as rare as possible, I have to give special mention to the Wagyu beef tataki. Seared perfectly, sliced thinly and accompanied with root vegetables drizzled with a finger lickin’ good vinaigrette, this tataki is a dish you won’t forget in a hurry. As I’m also partial to a bit of pork belly, I have to admit the “pork belly kaku-ni,” served with sweet soy broth and Nitamago egg is almost too good to share. It made me want to hide under the table and scoff the lot. I could go on forever detailing the culinary delights at Satsuki but nothing beats discovering it for yourself. Go now!

David Leslie:

Food - Assorted Sashimi - Tuna upon shredded green seaweed with tobiko roe...mmm. Salmon upon shredded daicon...delish. Buri upon red seaweed...scrumpshush. Scallops with salmon roe....need I say more? Dessert ...easily the best creme brûlée in Western Australia Facilities - Private and well up-kept but inconvenient toiletry facilities (hint* outside and to the right) but still not public at least.review  28/03/2013
