PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIARetro Betty’s provides diners with a taste of 1950s America among the uber-cool surrounds of the Leederville cafe strip. Though recent renovations have meant the loss of much of its original retro decor, Retro Betty’s continues to have a warm and welcoming atmosphere with comfortable booth seating and a constant stream of funky tunes to accompany your meal.
The menu at Retros reflects the new-age type clientele for which Leederville is famous. You can try anything from the “baby blue beef burger” (served with a spread of blue vein cheese topped with cooked mushrooms and onion), to the “barnacle burger” (fried fish fillet on lettuce, cucumber and white shoots). But if these don’t sound like your cup of tea, you can always choose from their more traditional fare like the “Betty burger” (beef served with lettuce, tomato, Spanish onion and cheese accompanied by a serve of crinkle cut fries). The fries are the best I’ve ever had! Some of Retro Betty’s more interesting selections come from their drinks menu. Try a “rocket”, a very refreshing (and energising) blend of chilled lemonade and espresso on ice, or the “wild thing” lemon drink with ginger or mint. Top it off with one of their 10 different choices of oven-baked pancakes and you will walk away feeling like you’re on cloud nine.
