The Mussel Bar Seafood Restaurant sits right on the water at Fremantle's famous Fishing Boat Harbour. Smell the fresh sea air and take in the spectacular views over a pre-dinner drink as you anticipate the enjoyment of one this historic port city's finest restaurants. Obviously, the kitchen's specialisation is mussels but also on offer are a broad range of seafood dishes as well as non-seafood proteins and salads.

Completely surrounded by glass and perched on pylons over Fishing Boat Harbour, it’s easy to see why The Mussel Bar is a popular spot. Sea-green hues and sultry lighting surround the restaurant while inside diners are offered an intimate setting with views of luxury watercraft and fishing vessels sailing by just metres from the windows. Paying expected homage to its namesake, mussels are the main feature of the menu. These deliciously fresh little morsels are offered in five different styles including traditional chilli, Italian, moules marinieres (white wine and fresh herbs), garlic or Thai green curry. If feasting yourself silly on mussels is not your sole reason for visiting The Mussel Bar, don’t be disheartened. The menu includes a great range of alternative seafood, meat and poultry dishes all of which carry the same amount of flavour and freshness as the mussels.

Always a sucker for a tasting plate, this one left a particularly lasting impression on me with its combination of seafood and meat-based bites, like the pork belly and chorizo with chilli and tomato jam. Freshly shucked oysters are another must-try here, particularly the tempura with ponzu sauce and the Bloody Mary shooter. For something a little more substantial, the mains menu is a seafood lover’s delight with the seafood platter being a stand-out favourite. With freshwater yabbies, salt and pepper squid, marinated tiger prawns, snapper fillet, oysters and a bowl of mussels of your choice, I think the platter speaks for itself. If you’re crazy for crustaceans, you must try the tempura soft shell crab with baby pickled eggplant – its simply divine. Non-seafood diners have not been forgotten and although the choice is limited, the produce is fresh and the beef fillet in particular is very good.

TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. I went for lunch today at Mussel Bar and could not be more disappointed. I was with a group of 8 people and just 2 of them were lucky enough to be happy with their choices (they ordered mussels). My partner and I ordered a seafood paella. The rice looked and tasted like 1minute-microwave rice. The sauce was canned tomato sauce! Three of my friends ordered the beef steak that was overcooked and tasteless and the peas that came with the dish was completely raw! And when I mean raw, I MEAN RAW! My other friend who ordered a simple fish and chips was disappointed with her choice since the fish was again tasteless, the chips was oily and hard rock and the size of the dish was just a shame! When we complaint to the manager he just said that he was sorry and didn’t give any further explanation. * To be fair our waiter was really  07/11/2011
