PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIASome people flinch at the thought of paying more than six bucks for a burger, but when you mention ingredients like Mt Barker chicken, Mondos meats and West Australian saddle tail snapper, the flinch turns to fancy. Jus Burgers, located in the heart of Leederville, has barely been open a year, yet it is proving to be a smash hit. Just as I was wondering why this funky little eatery – with its red lamps and brilliant graffiti mural wall – was so special, I learned who was behind it all. It’s none other than Mr Justin Bell; a budding young English chef who has made his mark at many highly regarded restaurants throughout Perth and Western Australia, not to mention internationally.
Justin saw a niche in the market for gourmet burgers made exclusively with the best West Australian produce and hey presto, he made it happen. Seating at Jus Burgers may be cosy but the atmosphere is always fun and inviting. But it’s the burgers that make waiting for a table so worthwhile. Start by picking your main ingredient such as 100 per cent MSA-grade Harvey Beef, Amelia Park char-grilled lamb, Mt Barker free-range chicken breast, West Australian kangaroo, boerwors or one of the many vegetarian options. Next select which style of burger you’d like. The beef burgers come with a plethora of ingredients and go by fabulous names such as the “Pommy Burger” (with cheddar and bacon) and the oh-so-fancy “Guvnor” (with 270 grams of beef and French foie gras for anybody “game” enough – pardon the pun). The pancetta chicken burger with shaved pancetta and pineapple instantly earned my seal of approval. Once again it looks like Justin’s onto a winner and with a Subiaco store opening soon there’s no stopping Perth’s very own burger king!
