PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAEvery Perth suburb seems to have a little local shopping centre complete with supermarket, fast food outlets and one or two restaurants. They may not be known for silver service or high-end cuisine but most of them are popular with locals for above average nosh. One such restaurant is Anghiti, located in Perth’s northern suburb of Padbury. Every time I visit this place for my Indian fix it is packed to the rafters. Modestly decorated with Indian canvases adorning the walls, it’s a smallish venue with great atmosphere. The open kitchen lets diners experience the theatre of chefs at work while staff are quick on their feet to satisfy hungry guests.
Owner and master chef, Bir Singh, cooks up his wholesome secret recipes, which he believes stand true to the philosophy behind great Indian cooking. Keeping things as authentic as possible, the food at Anghitit is cooked using a traditional Tandoor oven and a stove fuelled by charcoal and wood. This age-old cooking style makes a big difference with dishes like the ever-popular tandoori chicken and naan bread. I must admit the garlic naan at Anghiti is one of the best I’ve had in a while. All the classic Indian dishes grace the menu here like butter chicken, tikka masala, lamb vindaloo and rogan josh, but there’s also plenty of other dishes to impress, especially vegetarian. The
palak paneer (often watery at other Indian restaurants) is a thick concoction of Indian cheese cooked in spinach that’s just divine. The vegetable curry with cauliflower, beans, potatoes and much more is another lovely dish brimming with flavour and not too much heat – a great way to get the kids to eat their vegies. And the best thing about Anghiti? The take-away is just as fresh and delicious!
