When I think of fine dining and restaurants that I reserve for special occasions, The Loose Box in Perth's hilly suburb of Mundaring is always the first to come to mind. Since 1979, highly acclaimed chef Alain Fabregues has been treating diners to his finely tuned skills of traditional French cooking and flawless service. When people announce they are going to The Loose Box for a meal, their statement is usually followed by a chorus of gasps and shrieks shrouded by jealousy. And for good reason. Firstly, you want to book as far in advance as you possibly can to avoid disappointment - two months is a good starting point. Secondly, to make the most of your meal you may also want to book accommodation at one of the Loose Box cottages or somewhere nearby so you can enjoy the beautiful wine list. Thirdly, prepare to have your senses overwhelmed by edible works of art that are nothing less than astounding.

Unless you speak fluent French, you may have a little trouble pronouncing the menu items, but the waitstaff are more than happy to explain what each dish involves. My advice is to try the degustation menu a splendid way to experience the best Alain has to offer. The a la carte menu has a range of appetisers, entrees, mains and desserts to choose from, all of which are a culinary experience in themselves. From wild mushroom terrine to snail fritters, fully boned pigs trotter to white farmed rabbit or the slow-cooked duck, the menu showcases the best of French cuisine. .

The set-price menu includes appetisers, entrees, main course, dessert and coffee. It is classic French fare using local ingredients with a light, modern touch. A beuatifully constructed entree of shelled yabbies wrapped in smoked salmon is served on polenta with vanilla oil and tomato and zuccini salsa. A main course special of braised beef cheeks is in a rich but subtle flavoured red wine sauce. The restaurant also has chalet accomodation towards which happy couples can be seen making their way after dinner. The wine list is comprehensive and reasonably affordable.
