Indian food is one of those cuisines that people get cravings for. That is, unless you’ve lived in London and need a curry fix to cure feeling homesick. Whatever your reason, there’s no doubt having a good curry is good for the soul, not to mention your sinuses. Situated in West Perth, the Royal India team are known as “curry legends,” serving Tandoori and their house specialty of goat curry to Members of Parliament, international film stars and local curry-cravers. Unlike many Indian restaurants, Royal India’s interior is light, fresh and modern with polished floor boards and simple artwork. But the biggest drawcard has to be their food and service.

Hailing from Southern India, the cuisine features seasonal and traditional favourites like Goan fish curry with coconut, tamarind and chilli in a creamy sauce. There’s plenty to choose from with the menu being split into poultry, pork, beef, lamb, seafood and vegetable sections to help with your selections. The pork jalfrezi is packed with the flavours of onion, garlic, ginger and tomato much like the Indian favourite of rogan josh. Although there are plenty of delicious meat-based dishes to choose from at Royal India, I often find myself turning vegetarian for the night; purely because their vego menu is so fantastic. Team a couple of naan breads with palak paneer, Bombay aloo (spicy potato curry), aloo ghobi (cauliflower and potato with spices, ginger and tomato) and my all-time favourite dhal makhani (made with black lentils) and you have one very content curry-lover. The service is also memorable at Royal India with staff paying attention to your every request. Even those who ask for less chilli are made to feel very welcome – something that’s very rare to find in an Indian restaurant!
