PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAAlbany Highway in East Victoria Park is fast becoming a dining destination. The pizza parlours and kebab shops have given way to a fresh new breed of eateries, some of which are creating a solid reputation amongst critics and locals. Ten Ten Kitchen is not overly new but it has definitely has earned its presence on the highway. Spacious enough to cater for big hungry crowds, large families and bulky prams, Ten Ten is a real favourite with those who live and work locally. The interior is clean and simple with traditional Chinese light fittings and a few murals, which give the room an authentic feel. The menu is a nice blend of Chinese and Malaysian, with the latter cuisine a particular specialty. Good Chinese food is pretty easy to find but when it comes to Malaysian fare, I’m often disappointed. Thankfully, that’s not the case at Ten Ten.
For starters there is a range of entrees and soups, most of which feature Chinese flavours. The bowls arrive at the table piping hot and packed with plenty of flavour. If you do decide to veer towards Malaysian style dishes, prepare for some seriously flavoursome and spicy cuisine. The menu offers king prawns with runner bean sambal, beef rending and a wonderful asam squid (a salty dish made with tamarind), but my vote has to go to the ikan bilis sambal. These deliciously Moorish deep-fried whitebait pieces are so packed with flavour, it’s impossible to stop eating them. Highlights from the Chinese side of the menu include the Hainese chicken, steamed toothfish and spare ribs Peking style. Although this place seats over 100 people, it’s a very popular spot so bookings are highly recommended to avoid disappointment!
