PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIATucked away on the quieter northern side of Northbridge, Tarts cafe has gained a solid reputation for its fantastic coffee, fresh fare that changes daily and a relaxed community atmosphere. This leafy end of Lake Street is an easy walk from the heart of Northbridge yet seems to be in another world. The neon lights of nightclubs and thumping music are replaced with locals casually walking their dogs and birds chirping in the trees. Breakfast at Tarts is as good as it gets with simple creations like avocado on sourdough toast or banana pancakes. Their omelettes are also legendary with the Spanish style (potato, olives, chorizo and fetta) packing a wake up call for your tastebuds.
As the breakfast crowd dawdle home and the lunch crew begin to arrive, mouth watering aromas from the kitchen replace the ever-present scent of coffee. There’s always a range of healthy salads, Panini with gourmet fillings and tarts on offer, all of which are prepared fresh every day with top grade produce and tender loving care. But perhaps the most unique characteristic of Tarts is the range of giftware available. Teas from T2, gourmet sauces from Simon Johnson, one-off pieces from local fashion designers, great travel and homeware books, sweet smelling body lotions and a great range of locally made jewellery are all for sale at Tarts. A word of warning – if you find it hard to leave a shop (or cafe for that matter) empty handed, only take enough money for your coffee or food as the bits and bobs at Tarts are irresistible. If you’re not careful, coffee and lunch could quickly become a pricey affair.
