PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAWhen was the last time you boasted about eating great food that made you feel good? When I say “feel good” I mean not only in your belly but also in terms of social consciousness. Source Foods in Highgate are setting a prime example in the food service industry for not only their commitment to providing great quality food, but also ensuring that all their produce is sustainable. Suppliers are selected for their environmental and ecological awareness and the positive effect they have on their local and surrounding communities. You could even go so far as to say you’re doing your bit for the environment when you eat at Source Foods. And the best thing is there’s not a hint of mung beans or lentils on the menu.
Although Source isn’t open for dinner, the breakfast and lunch menus are the real deal with large servings prepared fresh to order. The eggs and chicken are free range, the bread is organic and the service is wholesome. Give your conscience a kick start to the day with the big eco-brekkie or the homemade Bircher muesli made with organic whole grains. Even the coffee is Fair Trade, organic and locally roasted. The lunch menu caters for small and large appetites with dishes ranging from organic salads to blue corn nachos with all the trimmings. For those who can’t go a day without getting their red meat intake, The Northern Statesman will surely appease your yearning with Dandaragan organic beef, wholegrain mustard, rocket and Romano cheese. Their burgers – starring your choice of tofu, chicken or beef as the main ingredient – are pretty darn good too. If you’re vegan or have particular dietary requirements the menu offers plenty of options including gluten-free meals and dishes made with no animal products. This is soul-nourishing nosh at its very best.
