It’s thought that the people of Perth have an undeniable obsession with Indian food but the reasons why are often debated. Could it be that we have so many British expatriates living here or could it simply be that we have an abundance of great Indian restaurants to choose from? If you’ve ever visited 2 Fat Indians in Mount Lawley, you’d probably argue the latter. Perfectly situated next to The Queens hotel on Beaufort Street, 2 Fat Indians is often the next point of call after a few pints at the pub. The vibrant orange interior, decked out with comfortable booths and fabulous pendulum light fittings, seems to combine with mouth-watering aromas to beckon pub-goers and footpath traffic inside. The trouble is, if it’s a Friday or Saturday night and you haven’t made a booking, you may be disappointed as this place fills up quickly.

Folks arrive in droves to get their fill of the famous Goan fish curry, rogan josh and butter chicken, soaking up the last remnants of gravy with superb garlic naan roti. Also responsible for Bollywood Restobar in Innaloo, the owners of 2 Fat Indians certainly know what they are doing and employ Indian chefs who have five-star experience when it comes to recreating this traditional northern Indian cuisine. Although I’m not vegetarian, I often give meat the flick when dining on Indian since there are so many tasty vego options. One particular dish that sends me round the bend is dhal makhani. Made with black lentils in a tomato-based gravy with cream and spices, it has to be one of my favourite dishes at this restaurant. However, no matter what you choose, every dish is sensational. Just make sure you order enough naan to sop up the gravy!
