The Whale and Ale in Clarkson is a great family venue with a contemporary style restaurant and special events almost every night of the week. Although it sports a name reminiscent of an old English pub, the Whale and Ale is as Australian as you’ll get.

Although it sports a name reminiscent of an old English pub, the Whale and Ale is as Australian as you’ll get. Major renovations a few years ago have given the venue a fresh new look, complete with natural timbers and stones, a warm colour scheme and fireplaces for winter. The alfresco area and beer garden – an essential part of any successful Australian hotel – features comfortable seating and plenty of mood lighting, perfect for celebrating with friends. The Whale and Ale is quite unique because it’s family owned and operated, creating a relaxed family friendly atmosphere.

Food-wise, it’s well above your average pub grub. Firstly, they have the most user-friendly menus I have ever seen. Decisions are made so much easier (for me at least) when the food is split into categories such as salads, meat, pasta, chicken, vegetarian, seafood… you get the idea. Even though there are well over 40 items to choose from, the task is actually very enjoyable. The chefs have created an innovative selection without going overboard; after all, it is a pub. Steak-lovers will adore the MSA-graded fillet, rump, sirloin and T-bone served with fries, salad and your choice of mushroom, pepper, garlic or bearnaise sauce. Other favourites of mine include the chicken, mushroom and spinach filo, the grilled barramundi steak topped with creamy garlic prawns, and the chorizo and field mushroom ravioli. Vegos will be impressed with the grilled vegetable stack served on a risotto cake and parents will love the kids menu which offers more than just chicken nuggets. There are events held almost every night at the Whale and Ale so round up your family and friends and head out to Clarkson for a whale of a time (pardon the pun – I couldn’t resist!).

Whale and Ale - User Reviews

Tanya:

I just celebrated my best friends 30th Birthday on the weekend at the whale. What a fantastic night we had. The food was great, service was fantastic. Darren Reid was playing in the bar, we ended up staying all night long. Thanks Whale and Ale for another great night!!!!review 30/10/2011

Bianca Kenwick:

From the moment we walked into the venue, we were greeted with smiley faces from the wait staff. The maître d’ quickly seated us to a quiet table up at the top corner next to the window. This was our first experience of the Whale and Ale. My partner went up to place our orders. The waitress was very friendly and polite. For entrees, we ordered the soup of the day (tomato). It came out steaming hot and with a nice piece of garlic bread. The entrees were delivered by the waitstaff about 5 minutes after we had ordered them. Our plates were cleared 10 minutes after we had finished eating. I ordered the beef and guinness pie and my partner ordered the chicken curry. The beef pie was beautifully cooked with a really nice rich flavour and the slow cooked steak fell apart when I ate it. The pastry lid was cooked really well and was crispy and golden brown. The garlic mash was a bit bland but had a good consistency and was steaming hot. The vegetables that came with this dish were steamed as per the menu description but were slightly on the soft side. I think the pie is a great pub restaurant dish and it tasted rich and delicious, looked really nice on the plate and is a perfect winter dish! My partner’s chicken curry was nicely presented when it came out to him. It had a side of mango chutney, which he really enjoyed as well. He said that the dish wasn’t too spicy and it was just the right amount of rice and curry. Again – another good hearty pub meal. After we had finished eating, we were contemplating getting dessert and Justine cleared our plates after about 10 minutes and offered us dessert menus. We decided to decline and left the restaurant. The restaurant was quite busy when we sat down and there were more and more people arriving as we left. The maître d’ was very switched on and was constantly greeting and seating people. The food was very tasty and the service was good.review 01/09/2011
