There’s nothing like a new venue to revitalise a restaurant or pub, especially when the surroundings are as sleek and modern as the recently opened Breakwater at Hillarys Boat Harbour. Moving to the very end of the boardwalk on the freshly built extension that links the southern carpark, The Breakwater has traded in its dark, old premises for clean lines and plenty of natural light. No matter where you sit, whether it’s inside on the comfy ottomans or out on the generously sized, protected deck, water views are pretty much guaranteed. There’s a very relaxed mood about this place and it is already popular with all walks of life from families to young locals eager to claim this new haunt as their own. With neighbouring restaurants pumping delicious aromas into the air, it’s hard not to get hungry at The Breakwater.

Thankfully, they have a very simple yet tasty menu with dishes that can be shared, gourmet pizzas, salads and a handful of burgers all under $30 each. The marina seafood plate has a lovely selection of prawns, lemon pepper squid, tempura fish and fresh natural oysters; a nice choice coupled with fries and aioli. Gourmet pizzas are very popular, with options like the roast pumpkin, fetta-stuffed peppers and red onion jam pizza or the chorizo, artichoke and brie pizza – both highly recommended. If you’re ordering pizzas, just remember they’re served as they are cooked and may arrive separate from other food ordered at your table. For something a little more substantial, there’s a great chicken breast burger with everything but the kitchen sink and other delicious bites like lemon pepper squid with rocket and mango mayo. The Breakwater is a superb spot for a simple lunch, a few drinks and watching the sun set over the marina.
