Just 45 minutes’ drive north of Perth, Mindarie is a tidy little coastal suburb that’s become quite a popular spot with tourists and locals alike. As well as a fabulous marina and beautiful views, Mindarie also has a terrific boutique brewery located right on the water’s edge at the Marina. The Indian Ocean Brewhaus and Grill is a major hub of activity on both weeknights and weekends and it’s easy to see why locals have adopted it as their own. Fabulous ocean vistas, a very funky fit-out and, of course, great beer and food have made this venue a shining star of the north. There seems to be something happening here almost every day of the week, whether it be live entertainment, happy hour, complimentary wine, a beer and burger night or their Thursday special “Spice It Up”.

The food is good old-fashioned pub-grub prepared with a little extra emphasis on fresh produce and big flavours that match well with the beers brewed on site. There’s plenty of plates designed to share such as the posh ploughman’s, the Indi hotplate or the soft shell crabs – all of which match effortlessly with the local ale. The rest of the menu covers a nice selection of oven-fired pizzas, hearty grills like peri peri chicken or barbecue pork ribs, burgers and pastas. Servings are of generous size and are delivered to your table quickly; perhaps the reason behind this is so punters don’t get too sozzled while waiting for their meals. Whatever the reason, the speedy service works for me. One word of advice – if you’re thinking of taking the kids along for an early dinner or Sunday session, The Indi has a “no children” policy from 6pm onwards. I’ll let you be the judge of that rule.
