PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAIf you've ever seen the movie The Big Nightthen youll remember the passion that Primo and Secondo have for their little Italian restaurant and the food they created. Ever since I watched that movie Ive been searching for a restaurant that exuded the same level of fervour and European charm and, after dining at Da Brunoïs, I am thrilled to report the search is over. This little house-turned-restaurant is as quaint and simply decorated as can be, yet so cosy and comfortable. A series of little dining rooms maximise intimacy as the maitreï de and Bruno himself tend to diners. The first thing to really impress me was the complete absence of menus. Blackboards throughout the restaurant gives an overview of the ever-changing menu; Bruno, however, still attends our table to explain each menu item in a manner that only stems from true passion.
The antipasti della casa was a perfect start to the meal with an assortment of little creations to whet the appetite. The vitello tonato (veal with tuna sauce and capers) was so good it left me wanting so much more. Brunos home-made ravioli with crab has to be one of the best ravioli this side of Italy. Fresh pasta with visible chunks of real crab are drizzled with a ridiculously light cream sauce to create one of the most enjoyable dishes I have experienced this year. Although we could have easily cancelled our mains and ordered another plate of ravioli, Im glad we didnt. The Morton Bay bugs with prawns, and the veal cutlet were both truly remarkable. If you havent had the privilege of experiencing Da Bruno yet, then my only advice is go now.
