PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAIt’s a good thing Cafe Relish is decorated in bright colours as finding it on this busy part of Scarborough Beach Road can often be tricky. Once you’ve located it, parking is a breeze and the colourful hues of the cafe do wonders in elevating the mood of a frustrated driver. Simply decorated with vibrant walls adorned with spectacular “Cool Reflections” photography by Nigel Hornby, the cafe has a fresh yet funky feel. The small team of staff do whatever it takes to make you feel at home as owner/chef Matthew Breen cooks up a storm in the kitchen.
The menu is simple without having a hint of blandness, featuring old-fashioned favourites such as sausage, mash and gravy (with Matthew’s twist, of course), house Caesar salad and braised lamb shank. For those not afraid of venturing into unknown – or at least uncommon – culinary territory there’s seared kangaroo, mushroom and rocket bruschetta, Gruyere and cashew fritters or their famous salmon fishcakes. Cafe Relish is also open for breakfast from Friday to Sunday and do all the breakfast favourites at very reasonable prices. Word about town is they are in Perth’s top ten for brekkie. If you’ve had a few too many the night before, try the “kick starter” – a chilli spiked saute of bacon, mushroom, sausage, potato, spinach, tomato and toast that’s sure to satisfy any craving for a hangover fix!
