LOCATIONOn Port Beach in North Fremantle, just minutes from the heart of Fremantle and 20 minutes’ drive from the city.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAHere in Western Australia we are blessed with magnificent sunsets over the Indian Ocean. As the mercury rises, one usually does one’s best to find the perfect spot to witness this natural beauty we are so privileged to have. Just a sand dune away from the ocean, Salt on the Beach in North Fremantle (formally Oysters on the Beach owned by the now defunct Mead empire) is one of those places that springs to mind. The new owners have given the place a fresh new look since taking over in 2007, while keeping within the relaxed beach vibe. There’s even a new Beach Bar in the sheltered semi-alfresco area offering lighter bites and fantastic cocktails. In the main restaurant area, the setting is neat and tidy with views out to Rottnest Island and a fresh new menu featuring dishes you would expect in a beachside venue such as this.
There are just as many entrees as there are mains and, you guessed it, seafood gets a big mention. Starters like oysters, tempura soft shell crab, carpaccio of salmon and a prawn martini (minus the booze) keep the seafood lovers happy, while the pork belly also deserves a mention. It’s a good thing there’s a fabulous view to distract you while you wait for your mains but when they do finally arrive, all delays are instantly forgiven. The duo of crispy skin salmon and seared scallops with colcannon (Irish dish made with potatoes and cabbage) is pretty tasty, as is the surf and turf. While the presence of bangers and mash seems a little out of place on the menu, there are plenty of English tourists who would beg to differ. Salt on the Beach is a big improvement on its predecessor and, if all else fails, just enjoy the spectacular location.
