Pettavel is named after an early Swiss emigrant, who planted the region’s first vineyard, and many of the wines produced on this grand estate carry names associated with him. Paltina and Evening Star, for example, were ships on which he travelled to Victoria. The building is large, housing the winery as well as the restaurant and cellar door. You can’t miss it – it rises from the flatness of the surrounding countryside and embodies a contemporary architecture; however, the interior is kept simple so as not to detract from the views across the vineyards.
For something simple and quick, the cellar door provides delightful taste sensations to accompany the wine tastings of your choice; but if it’s something delectably substantial you’re after, head to the dining room. The restaurant offers a fixed price menu for $75 with an additional cost for matching wines. This encourages a leisurely mode of dining so guests can thoroughly appreciate the contemporary dishes which rely heavily on seasonal ingredients. Begin with seared kingfish in a citrus and soy dressing, and braised oxtail tortellini followed, perhaps, by a main of Flinders Island lamb. The degustation is a fine example of imaginative cooking, well executed. Paired expertly with Pettavel wine favourites, this is one meal that’s worth the drive out of town for.
