PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe “zia”, or aunt, in question here is Teresa Bruno, and she and her family have run this home-style restaurant for more than 20 years, a testament to their commitment to producing quality Italian fare. With Teresa’s 30 years of experience in the kitchen, and her daughter in charge of front of house, guests receive authentic, traditional-style Italian hospitality with both meal and welcome. It’s a friendly and relaxed restaurant that holds few menu surprises but is conducive to a pleasurable dining experience.
The menu features classic dishes from throughout Italy, as well as some Calabrian signature dishes such as the baby goat in herbs, spices, wine and tomato sauce, which regular diners have come to love. Bear in mind that serves are generous before you order a three-course extravaganza, which might include baked cheese gnocchi or spaghetti tutto mare, chicken breast stuffed with taleggio or sausages with broad beans, and crespelle (crepes) of the house or tiramisu to finish. Other specialties include rabbit in an agrodolce (sweet and sour) sauce or involtini ai tre sapori. Complement this traditional fare with their small but reasonable wine list comprised of Australian and Italian wines. BYO is also available.
