REVIEWED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThe latest addition to the Docklands precinct and yet another venture from the Rivers Group, Yum Cha Dragon is set to be a success. The oriental-themed decor is bright and welcoming with marbled tables, bamboo, lanterns, Chinese ornaments and a central water feature with two large Chinese dragons. Every table has a view of the Docklands promenade and parties of eight or more can take advantage of two private dining areas.
Differing from other yum cha eateries, Yum Cha Dragon offers yum cha for lunch and dinner every day of the week. Order directly from the menu or choose straight from the yum cha trolley as it weaves around the restaurant.
Chef James Tam (known on the Melbourne Chinese food circuit for former success stories Mandarin Duck, The Duck and Magic City) has created a modern Chinese menu that he believes people want to eat and not what is expected on an Asian menu. If yum cha isn’t your thing, an a la carte menu is offered with a tempting selection of Chinese barbecue items such as the char siu beef tenderloin. Indulge in a seafood or barbecue platter and be rewarded by the sounding of a large gong, or opt for something from the wok and grill. Be sure to leave room for the well thought out dessert selection.
