Funky, different, fun and intriguing, The Horn dishes up herbaceous flavours and spices of Ethiopia in a corner deli space on Collingwood’s Johnston Street. The traditional Ethiopian red stew, kye wot, cooked with garlic, ginger, tomatoes and berbere has thick, earthy flavours, while the lamb ribs, godin tibs, are beautifully pan-fried with green chillies and pungent African spices. Many dishes come with the option of injera, an Ethiopian flat bread on which the food is served, and is eaten at the end of the meal once it has absorbed the rich flavours of the main dish. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and organic options are all available.
The Horn’s space is versatile and unique. Venture past the relaxed, cafe-style front bar to find dining rooms decorated with African artefacts and musical paraphernalia, and continue further to discover the large, courtyard beer-hall and live band venue, where jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, reggae and African tunes inspire a packed house of rhythm and beat aficionados most nights of the week. Refreshingly difficult to define, The Horn is a music lounge, restaurant and bar that offers Melburnians an insight into the food, culture, art and music of Ethiopia.
