Funky, different, fun and intriguing, The Horn dishes up herbaceous flavours and spices of Ethiopia in a corner deli space on Collingwood’s Johnston Street. The traditional Ethiopian red stew, kye wot, cooked with garlic, ginger, tomatoes and berbere has thick, earthy flavours, while the lamb ribs, godin tibs, are beautifully pan-fried with green chillies and pungent African spices. Many dishes come with the option of injera, an Ethiopian flat bread on which the food is served, and is eaten at the end of the meal once it has absorbed the rich flavours of the main dish. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and organic options are all available.

The Horn’s space is versatile and unique. Venture past the relaxed, cafe-style front bar to find dining rooms decorated with African artefacts and musical paraphernalia, and continue further to discover the large, courtyard beer-hall and live band venue, where jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, reggae and African tunes inspire a packed house of rhythm and beat aficionados most nights of the week. Refreshingly difficult to define, The Horn is a music lounge, restaurant and bar that offers Melburnians an insight into the food, culture, art and music of Ethiopia.

The Horn - User Reviews

Terri:

I was dragged here by a friend of mine the first time 4 months ago and found the place to be one of the bests places I have ever been, the staff were very lovely and friendly and the music on Sunday nights is just incredible! The food is quite interesting, very spicy meats and different red lentils but everything was delicious. --------------- UPDATE: Just went there last Sunday and things seem to have changed... the chef is different, the band is different, but also the service... Our favourite big smiley latino guy is no longer around! You definitely can feel the difference if you have been there before, but worth it anyway!review  16/07/2011

Emy:

Fantastic restaurant, food, service, music and atmosphere! Having not experienced Ethiopian food before, I was absolutely delighted by it at The Horn. It's amazing! The music is great and everything about the place is authentic. It’s very fairly priced. My recommendation is to let the host order for you - they know what they're talking about and embrace the true Ethiopian style: eating with your fingers by wrapping delicious stews and vegetables in the Injera bread (Ethiopian sour pancake). Would gladly go back there.review  03/05/2011

Gourmet Greta:

Overall The Horn had an fantastic vibe and experience. The band was fab and the people chilled enough to start jumping to Black Jesus, the live band on a Sunday night - which is saying something for the band I think! Definitely a non-pretentious zone that is fun and relaxed(hard to find). The band members also happen to work in the kitchen there, which adds a slightly quirky touch. Food was good and filling, without having the expected Ethiopian mega wattage of chilli - disappointing for some, a relief for most. Some of the more African booze was not in stock, which was disappointing, but understandable on a Sunday night. This place was crowded despite rain and football. I suspect it’s a good idea to book ahead. I'd say go - just go for the experience and then decide for yourself. Just don't wear your fanciest clothes, since you may find yourself amping it up to the band's reggae/jazz/rap in the courtyard!review  03/05/2011
