PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThere are definite pros and cons about having a bakehouse/cafe such as The French Lettuce Patisserie and Bakery a mere leg stretch from your home. The pros are obvious: deliciously tempting freshly baked cakes, pastries and other sweet and savoury delights available every day but Monday from 7am. The only real con being that I’m not French and therefore suffer the possibility of getting fat should I endeavour to take advantage of said local bakery six days a week. Choose to sit outdoors under a large awning at quaint tables that make you almost forget you’re on Nicholson Street, or indoors facing glass cabinets filled with their tempting treats.
Established over 25 years ago, The French Lettuce serves not only as a bakery and cafe, but they are also suppliers of wedding cakes and the like, as well as catering for special events. Start your day with a breakfast from the French Lettuce oven such as ham and cheese croissants, or orange brioche. Pop in for a beef and burgundy pie, chicken and sage roll, mini quiche, or a selection of sandwiches made with their own freshly baked bread, filled with a variety of quality ingredients and finished with house-made mayonnaise, chutneys, dips, sauces and dressings. Finish with a chocolate and hazelnut brownie or a rhubarb crumble tart.
