Dishing up stereotypical French bistro cuisine with flair, The French Brasserie on Melbourne's Malthouse Lane is a welcome addition to a lively gastronomic part of town. Leaving no doubt as to the authenticity of the restaurant, French-born restaurateur Hadj Sadki has teamed up with fellow Frenchie and chef, Frederic Naud.

The French Brasserie has taken over where The Italian left off when it moved to a larger location. It’s tricky to find the first time you visit, since it’s hidden down a laneway off Flinders Lane, but familiarity will breed content and an unerring sense of direction. Inside, the long space is dominated by a bar on one side and the walls are dotted with classic French posters. Leaving no doubt as to the authenticity of the place, French-born restaurateur Hadj Sadki (who’s had plenty of experience in Melbourne) has teamed up with fellow Frenchie and chef, Frederic Naud. Together they have created a smart and welcoming eating place.

French bistro food has lots of typical dishes – onion soup, terrines, salade Nicoise, snails, steak and frites. They’re all here, perfectly prepared and attractively presented. The porterhouse came with Cafe de Paris butter and a bowl of golden shoestring fries as well as an extra bowl of nicely dressed salad. Look out for less familiar dishes, such as the snapper fillets and shellfish cooked a la mariniere, served alongside a dish of baby vegetables. Note that this is a French eatery in a part of town where Italian restaurants dominate – no risotto or pasta here. The menu has seasonal variety and there are always specials of the day. A reasonably priced, well chosen wine list that’s mainly French and Australian is the icing on this rather delicious gateau.

The French Brasserie - User Reviews

The barista:

As a regular business traveller to Melbourne I have a number of favourite restaurant that I eat at and the French Brasserie is definitely on my list of top 3. Food is always superb. The oysters are the best and freshest I have had in Melbourne and the pate and terrines are simply Devine. On my most recent visit I had the pork as a main and I was blown away with the flavor and presentation. All accompanied by a long list of amazing French and Australian wines. Service is also friendly and the staff ( mostly French) are always helpful in recommending which menu items are the current favorites. You will feel like you are in Parisreview 09/04/2012

gary:

I am only giving this restaurant four stars because I’m yet to try everything on the menu and need room to move (though I have no doubt it will be up). The food is just magnificent and the service excellent. True, it was hard to find but its well worth the search. I’ve been twice and going again. I’m yet to eat anything I didn’t like.review 13/09/2011
