PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
This contemporary Japanese restaurant is a Wagyu specialist and offers a wide array of choice cuts of this marbled, melt-in-the-mouth meat. Takumi also differs from many restaurants due to its sumibi yakiniku style of cookery, where food is cooked at the table over charcoal. Diners can be their own Iron Chef – choose a set menu or select a variety of items for the smokeless grille and start cooking! Seafood and vegetables are also available for the grille as well as the premium Wagyu cuts such as jo-karubi (rib eye cap), jo-rosu (porterhouse) and tan (ox tongue) and with cuts differing in quality and levels of marbling, staff are on hand to help select a combination of complementary items.

Other specialties here include scallop sashimi infused with carrot and onion sauce, salmon carpaccio or traditional Wagyu beef stew. Alternatively try the Takumi special of thinly-sliced Wagyu fillet, lightly grilled and dressed with minced onion and a citrus seasoning. There’s also a selection of small dishes designed to partner sake, of which there is a good selection, as well as shochu and Japanese beers. Edamame, sea snails with kimchi sauce, boiled scallops with wasabi or a combination of the above make an excellent accompaniment. Lunchtimes see an assortment of excellent bento boxes on offer or try a Wagyu hamburger to eat in or take away. Takumi means connoisseur in Japanese and with its scrupulous service, attention to detail and dedication to offering the best quality Wagyu available, Takumi aims to please.

Takumi - User Reviews

Yakiniku:

Most reviews of Takumi (Melbourne) raved about the melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef so there I headed. Ok, the various types of beef cuts were delicious but wait, there’s more. As I stepped into the posh restaurant when it opened at 6pm for dinner I did not detect any BBQ smell in the air associated with grilling/BBQing eateries. Unusual…. The (yakiniku) grill crockery would have seen grease over its lifespan yet it was spotlessly clean or even sparkling round the edges. Unusual…. I slowly felt the heat from the charcoal as the grill warmed up. Good time to exfoliate my face while I wait, I thought to myself. The place must have turbo-charged the air-con as we were comfortably cool upon leaning back on our seats. I have been thoroughly entertained yakiniku-ing my food. The staff were welcoming and responsive too. This restaurant was unusually right in many ways.review 08/01/2012

Immediately I felt at ease and very relaxed when I walked in the door, we were greeted straight away and had our table ready for us. The staff were very polite and very traditional in japanese ways of culture. The food was amazing we had 2 types of banquets between myself and my date with a mixture of seafood and delicious Wagyu beef. I had never tried Wagyu and it was like butter in my mouth and so flavour full! The fun part of it all was you get to cook your food yourself, with staff advising on how to when it is served. Everything was perfect here, very clean, very polite, you didn't have to call over a waiter and they handled any request with high politness and made sure it was of our standard before proceeding with the request. I highly recommend this resurant to anyone wanting to feel special and enjoy a very true cultural japanese experience.review 16/02/2010
