Sugardough Panificio and Patisserie

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what Sugardough is made from. In this tiny bakery in Brunswick, shelves are stacked high with rustic loaves and sugared pastries; glass cases are filled to overflowing with promises of delectable delights and the air is sweet with the smells of French drinking chocolate, custards and spiced fruit.

From the popular South African table bread, made from fruit and cracken wheat, to the creme brulee tarts, everything at Sugardough is good. Everywhere you look each teacake, bread, pastry impossibly seems more enticing than the next. Start with the cioccolata calda (hot chocolate) and toast for breakfast (remembering to dip your toast into the chocolate!) or one of the soups, if lunch is on your menu. The pumpkin, sweet potato and spinach soup is a perfect winter warmer. There is also a selection of baguettes – try the Farmers Harvest filled with roast vegetables. Selecting a sweet something is serious business for any sweet tooth. Perhaps a chocolate-filled bombolani (Italian doughnut)? Or maybe, an almond cornetto? A blondie, (white chocolate brownie), or perhaps, the cranberry and yoghurt teacake. It’s hard to decide. On the way out, grab an olive baguette and maybe just a couple of those apple tartins.
