Southpaw has taken the space of Little Rebel bar – which used to be a little dark and a little dreary – and brilliantly transformed it into a sharp and intriguing place to relax, eat and listen to tunes. The front bar is open and stylish while the beer garden is distinctly Gertrude Street, with plenty of grit and character. There is also a welcoming section with couches and a fireplace, and together the areas create a balanced and versatile space that can accommodate small or large groups. Since opening its doors in August this year, Southpaw has wasted no time in wooing the locals with an impressive list of beverages and a selection of sharing dishes that boast delicious, local produce and smallgoods. Manager William Copes says Southpaw aims to offer beer, wine and food of exceptional quality, at affordable prices; and so far so good. Southpaw has done well to make some of Victoria’s lesser known yet tasty food and drink accessible to the average consumer, and has steered refreshingly clear of stocking its bar with easy mainstream options.

Hip hop, funk and reggae dub djs fill the airwaves on Friday and Saturday nights, but with this place growing by the day live music is likely to spread to other weekdays in the coming months. Cheese plates start at $7 while more substantial dishes range from $10 to $14.
