Inspired by the Slow Food movement, St Kilda restaurant SlowDown! at HarleyCourt has its focus set on a winning formula of affordable food and eco-conscious, sustainable dining. Menus change regularly depending on the seasonal bounty, coffee beans from Genovese are fair-trade, their whole animal approach to meat is noteworthy and best exemplified at the famed Sunday roast, which comes highly recommended. We think it's time to hop on the Slow Food bandwagon.

Its location says as much about the philosophy of this restaurant as anything. Acland Street’s SlowDown! at HarleyCourt is dedicated to responsible dining with every fibre of its being, embracing the slow food philosophy and offering locally-sourced, seasonal, sustainable produce. Owner David Carruthers and executive chef Ron O’Bryan share a passion that is evident in every feature of SlowDown!, from the large-scale photographs of the restaurant suppliers that adorn the walls (and to whom they can refer by name) to the external and in-house rating system provided along with locally-sourced wines to the organic butter on the table that is made in the SlowDown! kitchen. A “whole animal” approach in the kitchen also ensures that very little is wasted.

Most importantly, the restaurant shows that socially-responsible, local, sustainable, seasonal food need not be at odds with a first-class yet affordable dining experience. Ninety-five per cent of ingredients are sourced from within 200kms of the restaurant and the food itself is excellent – fresh, seasonal, top-quality produce that has been simply and respectfully prepared. The menu changes daily, but entrees might include zucchini flowers stuffed with goat’s cheese, Fernleigh free-range pork terrine or a salad of vegetables with yoghurt and beetroot soil. For mains choose slow-cooked ox cheek, corn-fed Glenloth chicken with pea and leek risotto and roasted garlic or duck breast with late summer peaches, heirloom beets and crisp duck confit. Winning desserts include bitter chocolate and olive oil mousse with chocolate soil, rosemary salt and coffee caramel, quince and pear crumble with berry compote and orange-scented creme anglaise or simply opt for a selection of Victorian cheeses. Book a place at the chef’s table where close proximity to the kitchen provides a front row experience or try the “Sunday roast” sessions which feature a different cut each week.
