PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAHidden down a laneway off Little Collins Street, Sarti is oh-so very Melbourne. An irregular staircase leads the way to this gem, where inner-city style fused with Italian flavours are the order of the day. Inside, Sarti is noticeably black and white with modern artwork and an immense bar in the centre of the dining room. The contemporary style suits both casual and swish occasions – you could sweep in for a drink before a formal event or call in after work with some friends and feel equally at home.
Riccardo Momesso’s menu has placed the emphasis on stuzzichini which are smaller bites that defer from the usual olives or pieces of parmesan you might expect. Stuzzichini, in fact, are much more like small first courses, only in tiny portions. You might choose to have one fried zucchini flower, maybe a scallop served in its shell with a parsley and pumpkin seed crust or a plate of elegant dark-red slices of Wagyu carpaccio with a mushroom flavoured drizzle. You can even order a stuzzichini tasting menu for $80 if you want to go the whole hog. There are also pasta dishes and a few more traditional main courses. Momesso likes to play around with contemporary flavours and approaches to food and seems to favour sweet accents on some dishes. This is apparent with a dash of honey with the walnut bechamel and braised duck that go with the cavatelli pasta or a vanilla sauce with the roasted peach duck breast. The wine list isn’t cheap but it does have some fine drops to choose from.
