Rockpool has been a stellar Sydney seafood restaurant for years, but when Neil Perry set up shop in Melbourne, the brand was in for a change. Melbourne’s Rockpool is a bar and grill: the main feature is dry-aged beef. You can smell it as you enter – sweet, meaty and surprisingly appetising. The restaurant and bar are both rather clubby and comfortable, with lots of timber and brown tones and even occasional pictures of cattle.

The focus is on the quality of the produce, which Perry sources with great determination. The best food here is often the simplest: say, grilled king prawns or a plate of cured ham, followed by a steak with a simple salad and potato gratin. At these prices, you ask? You bet: this raises simple food to new levels. Or try the four raw tastes of the sea to start – exquisite Japanese-influenced mouthfuls. There’s actually a wide choice that includes imaginative seafood dishes and delicious salad combinations, and even an occasional dish for vegetarians. Bar food is more limited in choice, but again, takes the familiar to new heights. Try the wagyu bolognaise with hand-made spaghetti, or the hamburger. The wine list is big and international, well chosen and fairly pricey.

Every Sunday my partner and I wine and dine at different restaurants. Last night we had ate at a restaurant in Docklands but we were so horrified with their food and unhappy with their service. We left unsatisfied and decided to try Rockpool for desserts to rectify what had occurred earlier that night. We ordered two desserts which were so amazing, we tasted the best of both worlds! Rockpool has impressed us with their welcoming service and amazing desserts. In fact, we were so impressed, we have booked dinner for the following Sunday. I am sure their entrees, mains, accompanied with their sides, desserts and wines will be breathtaking. Cant wait!review 25/07/2011

My now boyfriend and I dined at Rockpool last year when he flew me there to take me on a date. It was a wonderful experience all round everything was perfect the food was excellent the ambience was very romantic and I will be going back over Easter and dining there again for a sort of early anniversary. Very much looking forward to another perfect night at one of my favourite restaurants in the world - Neil Perry is a Master of his trade and I feel lucky to be fortunate enough to be dining in his restaurant again.review 18/04/2011

27th April 2008 - My husband and I had the best dining experience to date. The staff were professional and attentive, but it was the food that had us raving all night! Every mouthful was an amazing sensation - full of flavours that made you excited and wanting for the next bite. I can't thank the Restaurant enough for a fantastic night and will definately return next time in Melbourne. Prepare to spend at least $400 - but let me tell you, it is money well spent.review 30/04/2008

Dined last night at Rockpool. Menu was extensive, wine list very good. Service was fair to reasonable: charming and relaxed, but too many different waiters through the evening. Food was good, but not good enough for the money. Duck ragu with papardelle entree was perfectly cooked, but there were no secondary or tertiary flavours - only duck. 36 month grainfed beef was good and served as requested; medium rare. Bearnaise sauce needed to taste of tarragon more, but the acid balance of the sauce was excellent. Too much ($55) for 250gm steak, with portion raw cost around $10 - $12 dollars. Wont return in a hurry, better food for money elsewhere.review 06/10/2007

This is truly an amzing restaurant and goes down for me as the best dining experince i have ever had. The food is divine, the staff were excellent and the atmosphere amazing. Every meal we had was a sensation to the senses. I started with the Lobster Omellette, The Wagyu Rump and then the Caramelised Rice custard...and its quite safe to say they were all delicious. The staff were so friendly and professional i was almost waiting for them to slip up which they didnt. As it was my birthday, another nice touch was getting a small birthday cup cake complete with candle and an autographed menu from Neil. My only point of caution is we asked for the waitress to match our wines with our food, which she did fabulously but that added another $220 to the bill, leaving us with little change out of $500. Still it was worth it.review 17/05/2007
