While for some people the term “rice queen” raises very different connotations, around Fitzroy the name denotes a cheerful, modern and comfortable diner offering a broad selection of Asian favourites. The cheeky moniker of this self-proclaimed Oriental bar and diner is reflected in its colourful ambience and relaxed vibe. Those familiar with owner James Langley’s Panama Dining Room (just up stairs) will recognise the same bright and breezy, somewhat languid, decor complete with wicker chairs and big, blue, Florence Broadhurst-esque peonies splashed across the sand coloured walls. It almost feels as though you are perched comfortably on your front verandah by the seaside rather than one story up overlooking the sometimes grimy action on Smith Street.

Food wise there’s more style than substance here – the “pan-Asian” menu spreads itself a bit thin in trying to cover so much territory, but with most mains hovering around the $15 mark, it still lends itself to some appealing dishes that slip down quite easily with some good conversation and a few of Rice Queen’s undeniably excellent cocktails. Successful starters include the green mango salad with crispy fish and cashews or the miso dressed yellow fin tuna sashimi with asparagus and potato salad. For mains consider the Sri Lankan vegetable curry with cashews and sambal or the char kway-teow with its flavour hits of Chinese sausage, prawns and garlic chives. There are several vegetarian and vegan options as well as a range of daily specials. While those seeking a bit more fire and spice in their stir-fries or curries may look elsewhere, this mix of bar, lounge and dining space is perfectly suited to those seeking glamorous restaurant surrounds in which to enjoy the company of friends.
