The flaking, distressed walls of this hotel, which dates back to the late 1800s, give little indication of the smart dining room concealed within. Large arched windows, colourful, striped upholstery and ornate appointments such as the chandelier hanging above the marble bar, all give this bright dining room a feeling of grace. The restaurant menu offers a range of modern Italian meals – try the hand-made chicken and lemongrass ravioli served with capsicum Napoli and basil, or the veal shank braised in red wine and raisins with baby vegetables and new potatoes. A well-rounded wine list with more than 400 vintages and 40 wines available by the glass complements the menu.

While the Rathdowne Tavern offers a bit of polish if you are looking for a spot of fine dining, it also features deals most nights of the week. These can see you indulge in the Tuesday night special of 300g char-grilled porterhouse with roast vegetables and a pot for $15 or Thursday’s $12 curry night. There’s a bar menu available if you prefer its darker, more intimate, feel and an elegant ballroom upstairs which caters to functions, rounding out the offerings of this versatile restaurant and bar.
