Pure South is particularly well located, at the river level at Southgate, with a sheltered outdoor area. It’s a great place for people-watching, but if you want privacy it’s better to sit inside. The location is the main feature here, so the decor is kept smart, contemporary and simple with polished timber floors, dark chairs, bare tables and linen napkins.

What makes Pure South more interesting is that its focus is on produce from Tasmania and King Island. Think about it: what does well in clear air and cool waters? You’ve got it: seafood and beef, with some pretty good cheeses and wines as well. Pure South is ideal for the corporate market at lunchtime, with a classic dozen oysters and steak that’s sure to please. But it’s not limited to that – there’s a range of oysters, gorgeous scallops and lamb that is worth branching out from your usual. For steak lovers, take your pick of Hereford or Angus beef served with a cholesterol-raising mash that includes King Island double cream. Waiters are good, the wine list has lots of things worth drinking, plus there’s a decent selection by the glass.
