The paint may be peeling but this heart of Brunswick Street marches on to its own beat. In fact, it’s the contrast between The Provincial Hotel’s rough exterior and refined interior that makes it such an intriguing and popular haunt – attracting a range of people for a range of different occasions. The cafe offers casual dining with full, unpretentious service, and its menu focuses on French and Italian dishes made with simple, quality ingredients. Manager Tyson Murphy assures me the twice-cooked duck legs in poached pear Muscat sauce is such a crowd-pleaser it will never leave The Provincial’s menu, while the delicious seafood options – the produce flown in fresh from Western Australia – change on the whim of the season, ocean, or perhaps mood of head chef Ben Rigley.

The Provincial has an impressive wine list comprised of 110 different drops, mostly from Australia but with a few from Europe, as well as a list of some pretty fancy cognacs for those who know what’s what. The Chameleon Bar pumps out live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the more laid-back Public Bar woos clientele with a fireplace and Chesterfield for winter and street-side tables for summer.
