Concealed behind a red doorway in a covert laneway off Little Bourke street resides Portello Rosso, a small tapas and Jamón restaurant. The restaurant prides itself on honest and passionate interpretation of the Spanish way of dining and drinking: shared plates, fresh produce, both Spanish and Victorian wines, Sherry, Sidra, Padron peppers and succulent slices of Jamón, all tied together with relaxed yet professional service.

Italian in name but Spanish by nature, Portello Rosso offers a sense of discovery that begins with its discreet location and continues with an exploration of authentic Spanish cuisine. Hidden down a small laneway, behind the sliding red doors that give the restaurant its name, is a stylish space with enthusiastic staff who have an unmatched devotion to the Spanish way of eating and drinking. Recycled timber furniture, polished concrete floors, industrial pendant lighting and a narrow balcony directly above the compact open kitchen give this place its requisite inner-city chic, but there is also substance here to back up the bags of style. The traditional tapas are suitably straightforward, allowing diners to mix and match a variety of tastes, while a smart red meat slicer offers up its freshly shaved delights in the form of Serrano and Iberico jamon, and a large blackboard displays the daily tapas specials and larger raciones.

From the cold tapas selection try marinated white anchovies on honeyed goat’s cheese and tomato salsa, Galician octopus on paprika potatoes with black garlic, herbs, Spanish onion and sherry vinegar or stuffed Piquillo peppers. Hot tapas choices might include barbequed quail marinated in pomegranate molasses, cinnamon and orange blossom, stuffed baby calamari with sherry vinegar caramel or grilled, herb-crusted lamb cutlet with almond and garlic puree. The passion for all things Iberian extends to an excellent range of Spanish beverages. Team your tapas with traditional Asturian sidra (cider), a Spanish albarino or tempranillo or choose from a carefully selected list of sherries ranging from a dry fino to a sweet Pedro Ximinez. Finish with classic desserts such as creme Catalana or spiced chocolate pudding.
