Formerly a pub called The Phoenix Hotel, this Flinders Street venue may have kept Phoenix in its title but everything else has changed. Now an upmarket bar and bistro, the once smoky interior has been replaced by balls of light that drop from the ceiling, zebra print carpet, comfy couches and a clever design that gives off a feeling of intimacy despite its wide open space. Its inner city location makes it the perfect venue for a spot of lunch, after work drinks with colleagues or dinner with friends. On weekends DJ’s spin their tunes adding to the funky ambience.

From the Phoenix bar food selection sample the Peking duck roll with plum sauce, cucumber and coriander; spinach and fetta parcels wrapped in puff pastry and served with tzatziki; or the steamed prawn and pork dumplings served with soy and sweet chilli. From the Phoenix mains menu try the Thai vegetarian curry on a bed of jasmine rice with pappadums and raita; the Phoenix steak sandwich with caramelised onions, cheddar cheese and tomato, with fries; gourmet sausages served with mash, greens and a red wine jus; or the chef’s special dish of the day as noted on the specials board.
