Although I’m not a Melbourne local, I have lived here some seven years now so I am filled with shame to admit that until last week I had never been to Pellegrinis. Having said that, I’ve managed two visits in the past week so surely that would make up for something. This Melbourne institution has been feeding the masses for decades now; people who flock to this classic Italian espresso bar for honest Italian home-style cooking. Set in a long narrow space, the prime positions are at the bar with extra stool seating flanked by gold-backed mirrors and a large communal table in the kitchen also available.

There are no menus here, just a large hanging board that boasts the offerings. If there’s something you fancy that isn’t listed they can generally accommodate, though be prepared to receive a raised eyebrow if your wants are a little untraditional. Choose from the likes of minestrone du jour, spaghetti marinara, pizza napoletana, risotto primavera, ravioli Genovese, and cannelloni alla nicoise. If the side of bread that’s brought with your meal isn’t enough, a daily salad is also available. Try to leave room for one of the tempting Italian pastries on offer and possibly the strongest espresso Melbourne has to offer. This is an alcohol free zone but trust me, you miss it.
