Otsumami is not only the name for the Japanese snacks created to accompany beer, but also this great Northcote restaurant which takes this concept one step further into the realm of larger meals. The dining room is simple and uncluttered, with large modern lanterns hanging low over heavy timber western-style dining tables and low Japanese tables that call for you to remove your shoes and sit on tatami mats.

On Northcote's busy high street.

Situated on the main drag of High Street, Otsumami does a lively trade most nights of the week. The setting is modern, the menu traditional. Otsumami are snacks designed to have with a beer, but this restaurant takes the concept further and into the realm of a whole meal. There’s a separate sushi and sashimi section, and the remainder of the menu is divided into small, medium and large dishes. Staff are helpful when deciding upon a good amount of dishes for your table. Try the kaki sashimi of oysters with citrus dressing and fresh daikon for something fresh and different, or perhaps the kamo salad – pan-fried duck marinated in dashi broth, sliced and served on daikon with ume dressing and nori.

Dishes such as sweet potato gyoza, chilli tofu soba, vegetable tempura or eggplant simmered in sweet miso and sake sauce see vegetarians amply and deliciously catered for. Meatier offerings include gyoza dumplings with chicken, coriander, shiitake mushroom and five-spice, tonkatsu (pork fillet) or niku don (barbecue beef in ponzu sauce). If you’re looking for a sashimi experience but hanker for a main meal, opt for the tsuke sashimi don – mixed sashimi marinated in soy, garlic, sesame oil and mirin served on sushi rice with shiso, sesame and nori. Desserts are simple but refreshing – try the green tea or black sesame ice-cream with azuki beans. There’s also a good choice of Japanese beers, plum wine and sake. The Kizakura gold leaf sake with its floating, glittering golden flakes is guaranteed to make your occasion special.
