My partner & I visited Melbourne earlier this year and strolling on past Number 8 we just had to book. Am I glad we did! Being a bit of a wine enthusiast it took me quite a while to select the wine from what was easily the most extensive wine list I have ever encountered. I was like a pig in mud, particularly with the tremendous array of local cellar rarities. It was obvious the wine was the star of the show. The food certainly utilized minimal complexity and emphasized simple clean flavours. The desserts were also value for money with the crème brûlée outstanding (noting the nice selection of Tokays) it was the perfect way to end the night. Also, given it seemed particularly busy, the service was timely and simply impeccable. I honestly was expecting ‘just another’ modern Australian-type restaurant however Number 8 easily exceeded my expectations. We will be back… many times. Do yourself a favour and don’t be scared off by the wine list. If you’re after an approachable modern Australian restaurant which emphasizes its tremendous wine list via simple clean flavours this is for you. Enjoy! review 18/11/2010
