Profiled by de Groots MediaThe charming North Fitzroy Star Hotel suits all occasions and moods. Enchanting hidden corners, spacious formal dining areas, a paved courtyard and casual front bar with a communal table caters to a desire for anything from a quick bar snack to a special three-course meal. Couches fill odd corners, and open fireplaces, ambient lighting and walls lined with orange Penguin paperbacks cast a golden glow. You have the impression of being in a rather grand but comfortable stately home – board games stacked by the fire in the front bar, books for perusal, fresh flowers and chintz tablecloths are welcoming, homely touches.
The menu is European inspired, and although you’ll still find some classic pub fare such as fish and chips, there will often be a gourmet twist, such as chickpea and vegetable shepherd’s pie, or duck neck sausage with roasted witlof on beetroot and roast tomato puree. Place your food order at the front bar, take your pick from a substantial wine list, and find an armchair by the fire and a well-thumbed paperback as you await your meal. The light-filled, floral dining room is great for large groups, and there is also a private dining room available for special events.
