Tasty Basque-style pintxos and spiced vodka are perfectly sinful together at Naked for Satan; a unique Fitzroy restaurant whose name is a nod to its famous speakeasy origins. The addition of an upstairs rooftop bar is perfect for summer, offering great views over Fitzroy with a glass of Naked’s original take on sangria.

In the centre of the action, close to the corner of Brunswick and Johnston Streets.

Rather than the devilish connotations that might be drawn from the name, Naked for Satan refers to a previous occupant of Fitzroy’s Moran & Cato building. Legend has it that Russian immigrant Leon Satanovich, dubbed ‘Satan’ in typical Aussie fashion, set up an illicit vodka still here during the Depression. The hot summer months saw Satanovich working nearly naked leading to the phrase ‘naked for Satan’. Whether you believe the tale or not, it certainly gives this pintxos and vodka bar one of the most interesting names around. The décor is sexy enough to get one a little hot under the collar and still has something of that speakeasy vibe about it. Lovingly restored distillation equipment dominates the front bar, while throughout the rest of this extensive space, vintage nude pin-ups, customised mirrors and idiosyncratic lighting give a warm and inviting golden glow.

Individual desires rule the experience with self-serve, Basque-style snacks. These bite-sized pintxos are baguette slices speared with colourful vegetable and meat toppings. Diners curiously sidle up to the bar to choose from the variety of cold pintxos on offer, while staff circulate with trays of hot, skewered morsels. Cold pintxos might include a topping of scallop with green pea puree, olive, anchovy and guindillas pepper, or the simple but sharp flavours of wagyu bresaola. Flamed items feature delicate crumbed sardines, succulent meatballs or chorizo croquettes. The vegetarian snacks will also be enjoyed by the meat-eaters with crumbed eggplant atop blue vein cheese, mushroom on pumpkin mash, or potato tortillas all enticing hungry eyes. Stylish waiters roam the restaurant with sinfully sweet desserts and a cheeky grin as they serve bite-sized chocolate cannoli and soused plums. Vodka spiked with chilli, violet and cherry, or the heavenly opium and rose concoction are signatures of the devilish restaurant that also serves a good range of beer and wine.

An honour system prevails here – simply pay for the number of toothpicks you have at the end of the night. Naked for Satan is a hot little bar where you can be as sweet or sinful as you like with your servings. You will soon be forming a wicked addiction to its exotic morsels as you cross over to the more flirtatious way of dining.
