Tucked down Flinders lane, a mere minute’s stroll from the hustle and bustle of Collins Street, Moylans Cafe and Restaurant is yet another of Melbourne’s hidden treasures. This underground eatery could posses a sombre atmosphere with its exposed brick walls and dark timber furnishings, but instead is refreshingly inviting with a large open kitchen and eclectic clientele. Service is efficient, perfect for the busy lunch break, and the traditional cafe fare is reasonably priced despite its city location.

Take full advantage of the $19 lunchtime special inclusive of a glass of house wine and a selection of mains that might include chicken and pumpkin Thai red curry with seasonal greens served with coconut infused jasmine rice. From the light and quick menu sample the soup of the day, or grilled garlic or herb bread. From the sandwich selection try the roast chicken on Turkish bread with roast vegetables, pesto and spinach, a tempting pasta option, or a hearty main of medallions of eye fillet on a sweet potato roesti with grilled vegetables and a choice of either mushroom, pepper or red wine jus. Finish with the warm apple pie and ice-cream. The wine list is refreshingly affordable with six offered by the glass.
