Sloppy all-day breakfasts and any-way-you-like-em eggs are certainly a Brunswick Street specialty, but if you’re after a breakfast with an artiste’s touch, you have to venture a little further upstream to Fitzroy North – one of Melbourne’s gourmet breakfast capitals and the rightful home of Mitte Cafe. Understated, yet full of character, the cafe, named after a cafe quarter of Berlin, is set in an old milk bar, purchased and converted by the Mitte owners after it was all but lost in a house fire. Having opened its doors to an anticipative local crowd only a year ago, the outdoor tables that line a peaceful suburban corner are now packed with regular patrons on weekends and even weekday mornings.

Mitte offers an impressive and creative breakfast, brunch and lunch menu with an emphasis on fine, quality produce. Dishes like the smoked salmon salad with fennel, capers, Spanish onion and red apple tossed with a dill creme fraiche or the beetroot relish sandwich with Meredith marinated goat’s fetta put Mitte’s fare above the raisin toast and baguette selection that graces so many cafes with a similar front. Mitte also boasts delicious Dench breads and a selection of produce from the nearby Collingwood College garden.
