Fitzroy's Minlokal, 'my local' in Swedish, is exactly that, where neighbourhood breakfasters and brunchers rub shoulders at big communal tables in this small, friendly restaurant. Find a hook to hang up your coat and play nice with the other kids as you muse over a seasonal, European-based blackboard full of goodies. Breakfast means waffles, stewed fruits and baked eggs, while later in the day, chunky sandwiches are a favourite.

In the heart of Fitzroy’s residential streets is Minlokal, or “my local”, which lives up to its name with a relaxed, neighbourhood feel, friendly service and a plethora of devoted regulars. A living-room-sized space plays host to two large communal tables, so make sure you play nice with the other kids as you muse over a seasonal, European-based blackboard full of goodies. Breakfast offerings might include a saffron and potato tortilla or pan-fried haloumi with za’atar and mushrooms. The claypots are a focus here, with some Middle-Eastern influences coming into play. The shakshuka is a staple – baked eggs with coriander, tomato and labna – but try your eggs with spiced lamb, mint labna, currants, tomato and pomegranate molasses, or with pumpkin, green beans, preserved lemon and saffron.
Lunchtime salads and sandwiches are great value too. Sandwiches on Dench breads have delicious combinations such as roast chicken, provolone and apricot confit or beetroot, white bean puree and goat’s cheese, or sigh wistfully for Provence over an evocative salad of watercress, soft herbs, goat’s cheese, radish and roquette. The balance is right at Minlokal – food that’s tasty, inventive and reasonably priced, and the inkling that after a few visits, everyone will know your name and the staff will know exactly how you like your (rather excellent) coffee.
