On Eltham’s Main Road. DETAILS
Mercers is housed in a federation style weatherboard cottage, surrounded by a wide verandah and garden, set back slightly from Eltham road. Inside, the dining area is comfortably furnished and attractively decorated with tables set with white cloths and handsome glasses. There’s a certain formality to it but nothing stuffy, and the mood is decidedly friendly. Stephen Mercer and his wife Ute have run this restaurant for more than 10 years, building up a strong regular following.FOOD & BEVERAGE
The menu at Mercers is imaginative and assured, changing seasonally. Stephen Mercer has an innovative sense of flavour and a great eye for presentation; dine on the likes of spice glazed duck breast with duck confit waffles, or wild barramundi fillet with a spanner crab cigar, black beans and candied lemon dressing. Two courses is the minimum here ($57 for vegos, $62 for others) but three is a better idea, since desserts are simply gorgeous. The degustation menu is excellent, with the option of wines matched to each courses and a separate vegetarian degustation. The wine list comprises over 350 drops focusing Australia’s main wine regions, and there’s a good range by the glass.
