PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAThis charming and traditional eatery has long been the locals’ choice for an authentic pizza pie; and although the idea of new ownership had a few regulars worried in 2007, the change has brought creativity and a taste of modernity to L'Osteria, while keeping its much-loved aspects intact. Licensee Satinder Kapoor and his delightful family now run this Nicholson Street restaurant that appropriately takes its name from the Latin word meaning “guest”. Kapoor says innovative dishes – like the home-made gnocchi with blue cheese and pear or the delicious salmon and parmesan pizza – are influenced by a present-day Italian cuisine that boasts creativity and edgy flavour contrasts, rather than relying on comfort favourites from generations gone. A selection of clam and prawn dishes grace the entree menu, while an impressive mains list includes risotti, pasti and pizza – some of which are available for takeaway.
Great wooden pillars give character to the dimly lit and quiet L'Osteria space that has become a destination ristorante for business functions and large groups, as well as the usual family and couple bookings that remain steady. A solid wine list starts at $22 while main menu items begin at $20.
