Liar Liar

The Hawthorn end of Glenferrie Road has more than its share of eating places, but there’s still plenty of room for Liar Liar, which opened late in 2007. It’s just around the corner from the main road, and is only identifiable from the street because of the pavement tables and chairs. Otherwise, it’s rather anonymous from outside, with grey walls and dark windows. Inside, it’s a different matter. The interior sets a semi-industrial mood, with sombre tones, polished concrete floors, visible plumbing on the ceiling and stout, dark timber tables. But that’s enlivened by the funky music and the crowds who gather here. The big counter at the front is well stocked with attractive cakes (try the carrot cake) and filled pide bread waiting to be served.

Breakfast runs all day here, although at some point it segues into lunch. The menu is presented on a clipboard, with specials chalked up on a blackboard. Eggs Benedict, or the vegetarian version, are great at any time, but the steak sandwich and curries are standout choices for lunch. Try the tomatoes, fetta and pesto on sourdough, or the poached chicken and avocado pide for some tasty tucker. While the wine list is minimal, the coffee here is outstandingly good, and there is even a choice of beans.
