Originally starting out as a Spanish restaurant, the heritage of owner and chef Abdul Fadil is evident in the food and atmosphere which is reminiscent of a Moroccan bazaar. This small space with coarse brick walls has been transformed with an array of brightly coloured, patterned ceramics and glassware (also available for purchase), tiled tabletops and rich fabrics and cushions that now invoke a cosy environment in which Spanish and Moroccan specialties are destined to be enjoyed. The small courtyard at the back is home to the desert-style Moroccan “Royale” tent. With handmade lanterns casting a soft light over proceedings and cushioned benches to recline upon, it is the perfect way to experience one of La Paella’s banquets.

La Paella is a halal restaurant with strictly no alcohol permitted on the premises, but this hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of devoted local regulars. Instead of glasses of wine, delicious sweet mint tea greets guests upon arrival. Entrees include well-executed traditional dishes such as harrira (chickpea and lentil soup) or bastella (pie of chicken and almonds dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar). Leave plenty of room for main courses such as the beautifully tender lamb shank tagine cooked with Moroccan spices, preserved lemon and olives, or the surprisingly tasty Ifran chicken – an unusual combination of chicken in a honey and ginger sauce with pineapple, banana, almonds and mashed potato. Be aware that there is a 45 minute wait for paella, so although worth waiting for, it can be advisable to phone ahead for large groups or if time is a factor. Dessert options are limited to strong coffee and almond pastries, which is usually all that is needed after sampling La Paella’s generous hospitality.
