DETAILSShowcasing a range of hand-crafted beers that are truly enjoyable to drink, each with its own distinctive flavour, amazing aroma and rich colour. The James Squire trademark dates back to 1806, when First Fleet convict James Squire built his Brewery, The Malting Shovel Tavern, on the shores of the Parramatta River. Today, more than 150 years later, we bring his legacy to life by creating exceptional, flavoursome and truly unique beers in his name.
PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA This stunning edifice of steel and glass looking out across the water is a far cry from the humble beginnings of James Squire’s first brewery built more than 150 years ago. Bearing a striking resemblance to its sister establishment at Sydney’s King Street Wharf, Melbourne’s own Brewhouse offers its own charms, with dazzling views of the Bolte Bridge and the city skyline.
Beer lovers will be lured by the on-site microbrewery that offers the full range of fresh, hand crafted brews on tap, each with its own distinctive colour, aroma and rich flavour. Of course, the menu is designed to go hand in hand with James Squire’s finest tipples, with a range of bar snacks, pub classics and modern Australian grub given a Colonial twist. Beer suggestions are offered with each course so you don’t need to guess if not confident in your beer knowledge.
Rabbit and pork terrine with tamarillo relish or grilled lemon pepper chicken on salad make a great start, while the range of steaks and ‘parmas’ team perfectly with a James Squire golden ale or pilsner. Sample the ‘farmer parma’ with bacon and egg; ‘the thief’ topped with hot salami, olives and jalapenos; or ‘the lash’ with crispy bacon, mushrooms and King Island blue cheese. The barbecue kangaroo fillet or salt bush lamb are just made to go with an amber ale, while a cleansing pilsner best suits the heady combination of marinated prawns, crisp calamari and scotch fillet steak. Even desserts taste better with a beer – try sampling a fine ale with your wattleseed and peach cheesecake, chocolate and macadamia mousse slice or Eton mess. Of course other beverages are available, but the aim of this eatery is to offer a complete beer experience and really showcase the versatility of the James Squire canon.
