PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAToorak Road in South Yarra is not usually known for its great dining scene; however, you will find that many restaurants and cafes call this stretch their home. There are a few little gems too and Iyara definitely adds some spice to the mix. This restaurant takes a sideways step from the usual cheap and cheerful Thai eateries and is, in fact, glamorous with sleek lines, warm timber, coloured cushions placed on banquettes, and handsomely dimmed lighting.
The cooking is refined and elegant, the flavours authentic. The menu is supplemented by a list of the day’s specials, and the waiter’s knowledge and recommendations are always very welcome. Start with the betel leaf combo, which are pretty parcels of leaves curled around a crunchy blend of shredded carrot, coconut and peanuts. The scallops with tamarind sauce are presented on the shell, topped with a delicious nest of shredded vegetables, and seasoned with a delicate sour sauce. There are a number of duck curries, of which red is a favourite, where the finely sliced meat is served in a spicy coconut-based sauce. There are some fiery dishes, should you wish them, but all meals are presented beautifully which makes the experience all the nicer.
