PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA
This restaurant is the Prahran sister to the popular city eatery and part of the smart new Cullen Hotel on Commercial Road. HuTong takes its devotion to the fine art of the dumpling very seriously with a window that allows diners to view the activity within providing assurance that all dishes are made fresh. Behind the glass, the dumpling experts nimbly assemble the specialties of the house, including the highly desirable shao-long bao – silky, delicate parcels filled with pork and prawn mince and an aromatic hot pork stock. Other dim sum morsels to delight include baked barbecue pork buns, wontons with hot chilli sauce, and chicken, scallop or shrimp dumplings. Friendly staff are all smiles and more than happy to offer a how-to guide on the best way to tackle the most slippery offerings and also to look the other way when that advice fails miserably.

Dumplings aren’t the sole attraction here; another house speciality is Peking duck, cooked in the new, custom-made oven that produces a succulent bird in fifteen minutes. HuTong’s menu also features a variety of noodle and soup dishes, clay pots and stir fries in various regional styles, such as scallop and eggplant in clay pot with Szechuan chilli sauce, silken tofu with preserved egg or Chongqing-style fish fillet in hot chilli. With a bright and spacious dining area, private rooms and a pleasant bar and outdoor courtyard, HuTong promises to be a little more tranquil than its frantic city sibling, providing a relaxed environment in which to enjoy these Chinese specialities.

HuTong Peking Duck and Dumpling - User Reviews

wolfe:

Beautiful decor and polite, efficient service. Ordered Lamb with Leeks, and Crispy Fragrant Duck. Lamb was in a delicious sauce, but came with onions rather than leeks, and surrounded by a mound of barely blanched tasteless broccoli. Crispy duck was very lean ( a plus) but overcooked and totally without flavour (or fragrance). The Hoi Sin sauce made it barely edible. Other diners seemed to be enjoying their dumplings but our meal was quite poor. Disappointing.review  25/01/2013

We love this restaurant! Not being a dumpling fan I was hesitant, but have dined there several times and have found the food to be superb and the service excellent. The Peking duck is a must, delicious pancakes with tender duck and homemade sauce, with cucumber and spring onion strips. For the brave there are some hot dishes like the chilli beef, but there are also many milder options – my favourite being the crispy fragrant duck. For dessert I am partial to the banana fritters but also loved the flaming ice cream, syrupy but not too sweet. The staff are polite and accommodating and the restaurant has a very spacious and elegant feel to it. Location is great, either for public transport or parking, and I find it a huge plus to not have to drive into the city. Top marks all round.review  13/05/2011
